The Industry of Tsuyama

The Industry of Tsuyama

The main industries of Tsuyama are commerce and manufacturing.

In earlier times, the lumber, paper, and textile industries flourished in Tsuyama. After World War II, the development of thread-plying led to an increase in paper-processing production. Since that time Tsuyama has occupied a high place in Japan for the production of handbags for export, wall papers and paper cloth.

Traditional handmade crafts are produced in Tsuyama such as Japanese paper, splashed pattern cloth and wooden trays.

Since the completion of the Chugoku Highway in 1975, Tsuyama has completed five new industrial parks and has encouraged many factories to help improve the local economy and to promote employment. As a result, factories in the metal, mechanical, and electronic equipment industries have moved to Tsuyama, and the output of the manufacturing industry increased dramatically. In this manner, Tsuyama has developed as industrial inland city.

Tsuyama City has a population of 170,000 in its commercial area, and functions as a center of commerce in the northern part of Okayama prefecture. Recently due to improvement of traffic conditions and change of consumers' taste, superstores in the suburbs and convenience stores have exceeded small shops in sales. In order to vitalize these small shops located in the center of the city, an urban development scheme was introduced to modernize retail stores.

Due to the improvement of transportation and highway networks, Tsuyama has become a crossroads for the flow of goods to the surrounding area. Therefore, a distribution center is planned in Tsuyama to establish a circulation base for wholesale goods in northern Okayama prefecture.

In terms of farming, Tsuyama's main product is rice, though vegetables, fruit, and livestock are raised as well. Liberalization in imports of farming products and a lack of succesors for many family farms pose serious problems for the future of farming. Tsuyama's specialities are ginger, yams, beef and shiitake mushrooms.
